Handmade mattress craftsmanship is not just about appearance. It is about construction, durability and the way every part of the mattress works together over time.
At Midsummer Milano, we believe that a luxury mattress should be beautiful, comfortable and built to last. This is why many of our mattresses are made entirely by hand in Italy, using natural materials and traditional techniques that are increasingly rare in modern mattress production.
One of the clearest examples is hand side stitching.
What is hand side stitching in a mattress?
In a truly handcrafted mattress, the side panels are not simply sewn for decorative effect.
Our artisans use a curved needle to stitch the side of the mattress by hand. Each stitch is anchored to a perimeter spring, connecting the outer border directly to the internal spring system.
The result is a mattress that behaves as a more compact and stable structure.
This process helps the mattress retain its shape, improves edge stability and contributes significantly to long-term durability.
It is a slow process. The side stitching alone can take an artisan approximately one full working day for a single mattress.
That time is part of what gives a handmade mattress its value.
Why does hand side stitching matter?
The edge of a mattress is one of the areas that experiences the greatest amount of stress.
We sit on it. We get in and out of bed from it. Over the years, this repeated pressure can cause the side of a poorly constructed mattress to lose shape or bulge outwards.
When the border is properly tied by hand to the spring structure, the edge is better supported and the entire mattress works more coherently as one unit.
This is particularly important in a luxury pocket spring mattress, where the quality of construction should match the quality of the materials inside.
Hand tufting keeps natural fillings in place
The same principle applies to the top surface of the mattress.
Natural fillings such as wool, cashmere, horsehair, linen and cotton need to remain evenly distributed throughout the life of the mattress.
Hand tufting helps keep these layers securely in position.
This is especially important in a natural mattress, because natural fibres behave differently from foams and synthetic materials. They settle, breathe and adapt over time.
A well-made mattress is designed to accommodate this natural behaviour.
Not every “handmade look” is actually handmade
Many mattresses visually imitate traditional hand side stitching.
From the outside, the effect can appear convincing. The mattress may show a pattern of side stitches or decorative indentations that suggest manual craftsmanship.
But in many cases, these are created by machine and do not actually connect the outer border to the internal spring structure.
The appearance may be similar. The construction is not.
This is an important distinction when comparing a handcrafted mattress with a mattress that merely adopts the visual language of traditional craftsmanship.
How to tell if a mattress is genuinely hand side stitched
There is a simple test.
Sit on the edge of the mattress.
If the side visibly pushes or bulges outwards, the border may not be genuinely tied to the internal spring system.
A properly hand side stitched mattress should feel more controlled and structurally connected.
Of course, firmness and materials also influence how the edge feels, but the behaviour of the side panel can reveal a great deal about how the mattress has been constructed.
Why does a handmade mattress cost more?
The difference in price is not simply a question of branding or luxury positioning.
It comes from labour, materials and time.
A true handmade mattress requires skilled artisans, slower production methods and construction techniques that cannot be replicated by industrial machinery without changing the product itself.
At Midsummer, two artisans can work on a mattress from beginning to end.
That means every stage is controlled by people who understand how the springs, fibres, stitching and proportions interact.
The result is not just a more beautiful mattress.
It is a product designed to age well.
Handmade mattresses and long-term value
A high-quality mattress should not be considered a disposable object.
A well-built mattress can be maintained, repaired and, in some cases, refurbished over time.
This changes the idea of value.
Instead of thinking only about the initial purchase price, it becomes more useful to think about cost over years of use.
A mattress that performs well for many years, keeps its shape and can be renewed is fundamentally different from one designed around short product cycles.
For us, this is one of the most important meanings of luxury today.
Why this matters for retailers, architects and interior designers
Selling an excellent mattress is not only about offering greater care, expertise and stronger arguments to clients and architects.
It is also a way to increase the average value of each project and generate additional turnover with a product that naturally completes the interior proposal.
The bed is often one of the most important objects in a home, yet the mattress is frequently treated as an afterthought.
For retailers, architects and interior designers, understanding mattress construction makes it possible to recommend a better product, create a more complete project and offer clients something they will use every single night.
A mattress should be judged from the inside out
When choosing a luxury mattress, look beyond the fabric and the first impression.
Ask how it is stitched.
Ask how the fillings are held in place.
Ask how the side is connected to the spring unit.
Ask how much of the process is genuinely done by hand.
Because true craftsmanship is not decoration.
It is construction.
