WHITE NIGHTS - F. DOSTOYEVSKY

Dear all,

in these difficult times it is important to spare a moment to remember that there is also beauty in this world.

Why not read a short story? I suggest one by Dostoyevsky that I love: it is called "White Nights".

Like many of Dostoyevsky's stories it is told in the first person by a nameless narrator who is a young man living in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He is alone and suffers from this loneliness. One day at the beginning of summer he befriends a young woman and gradually falls in love with her, even if he knows perfectly well that the girl is longing to be reunited with her long-time lover. This inevitably happens in the end and the narrator is left alone once again: but he refuses to despair because now he has a precious moment of happiness to remember.
